Work feels a bit hectic.

work

This new position I am acting in at work has ramped up and I feel like I have no time to get stuff done. Bouncing from meeting to meeting to meeting, no time to actually get much work done. I often have to sit on mute in online meetings and do work when I’m not speaking but then you get to the point when people ask if you are still there and you have to ask them to repeat the question. I try to avoid that when I can but it’s getting to the stage where I have to either work back (which improves the flex balance but not ideal) or alternatively block out time in my calendar and hope that it’s not interrupted.

I have moved into an office which is good and bad. I think that people are less inclined to come up and ask questions, etc. when I am only accessible via a doorway, even if the door is permanently open. I have been in an open plan office for so long, it feels weird to hear my voice echo off walls but it is nice to be able to close the door if I need to concentrate or if I’m in an online meeting. I don’t have to bother others with my occasional outbursts of talking. Like when you say "Hi, how are you going" and everyone looks around because they are not sure if you are talking to them and then you have to gesture that you are on the phone or something!

There has been a lot of construction outside my new office window – the road is being pulled up, new stormwater drains are being added and they have just started to resurface the road. While it can be a bit noisy at times, headphones are pretty good at drowning out the noise and on occasions they big rollers and jackhammers make it feel like you are sitting in a massage chair only without the relaxing because, you know.. work.
