Defibrillator check

work

I nearly had a heart attack checking the office defibrillator at work the other day. Not literally but it gave me one hell of a fright and much embarressment!

As the First aid office for the library building at work, I am required to audit first aid cabinet to ensure they are stocked correctly but I also have to check the defibrillator to ensure it is charged as well as checking the expiry date for the battery and chest pads. While conducting the monthly check a few days ago, I was lifting the device out of the case to check the date on the battery. I somehow managed to hit the power button and the device proceeded to give me extremely loud instructions on how to "remove the chest pads from the device, and to place them on the patient".
As I wasn't expecting this, I jumped a mile and my have muttered some expletives. To make matters worse, the device continued to state these instructions in a calm but extremely loud voice.

After the first 5 or so iterations, it dawned on me that it was not going to stop until I either turned it off, or I actually removed the pads from the device. Removing the pads was not an option as this would then require the pads to be replaced but I had no idea how to turn it off!
I figured I could at least put my hand over the speaker to reduce the volume. By this stage the students who were in the learning commons had all started to poke their heads over their laptops to see what all the fuss was about. I managed to fish my phone out of my pocket and sheepishly looked up how to turn the device off, all the while covering the speaker with my other hand.

I found out that all you need to do is hold down the power button for a few seconds and it will turn off. At least I will remember for next time!
